ABSTRACT
The three extracts cited above lie uneasily with each other, reflecting in part the tensions inherent in the spiritual corporation that was the English Church in the latter half of the sixteenth century. They also reflect some of the themes of this study: ecclesiastical authority, parish communities and definitions of Protestantism, each in its turn serving to introduce aspects of the Elizabethan problem of reformation.
