ABSTRACT

We live in an information society. This is not something that will happen or is happening; it has already happened. Information is our basic resource, and information is our product.

Although we consume more food than ever before, only 3 percent of the workforce is engaged in agriculture. Although we consume ‘hard goods’ at an ever increasing rate, only 14 percent of the workforce is involved in manufacturing. By contrast, over 50 percent of the workforce is employed in offices and 80 percent of the office employees are considered to be ‘information handlers.’
