ABSTRACT

This statement raises the question, what is it that the 'English' were 'making believe' at the time landscape was transformed into scenery? An answer to this question might well be that they were making believe that England, Wales and Scotland formed a polity called 'Britain.' The crowning of James VI of Scotland as James I of England brought the possibility of creating a united British kingdom near to fruition, but it did not become a reality - Parliament balked.
