So muses physicist-turned-popularizer Joe Rose, the protagonist of Ian McEwan’s novel Enduring Love, until eventually he becomes disillusioned with his own contrived narrative: “What I had written wasn’t true. It wasn’t written in pursuit of truth, it wasn’t science” (50). Rose, who begins by lamenting the demise of the anecdotal form in science, ends by directly opposing his popular narrative to science or “truth.”
