ABSTRACT
As long as railway lines were few, with a small number of branches and crossings, the main concern (also valid to this day) was to ensure, before the departure of a train, that the line ahead to the next stop was clear. A series of accidents made necessary the posting of guards, who, by hand or flag signals, tried to notify the train driver on whether he should stop or proceed along his course.
