ABSTRACT

When the infant countess Maria de Luna was married to the infant Marti, the second son of Pere the Ceremonious (1336-87), no one would have predicted that twenty-four years later she would become queen of the Crown of Aragon. Her accession to the throne in 1396 came about by accident-an accident suffered by King Joan I (1387-96) while he was practicing his favorite pastime (which had gained him the sobriquet, cthe Hunter'). The king had no male heirs and thus it befell his brother, Marti, to succeed him; Maria, Marti's consort, became queen.
