ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at two newer methodologies which, like life histories or biographical research, are more in-depth and thorough yet also more nuanced in their organisation and application. Narrative and Discourse analysis look to explore the use of language in great detail, including its cultural and political meaning. Such approaches also involve a thorough yet typically fascinating exploration of personal experience. In general, these methodologies are more varied and complex than, say, the typical research interview, so careful planning and pre-reading prior to their application may be required. For example, if possible it may help to consider at least a cursory read of some of the literature cited at the end of the chapter. The chapter defines and explains each approach and also details some of the ways that each methodology can be used in practice.
