ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and details one of the more complex, diverse and in-depth methodologies with a long tradition, that of ethnography. The chapter offers a definition of ethnography and also discusses its approach, philosophy and logic, as well as some of the different theoretical approaches that influence its application by the researcher in the field. We also look at some of the key skills and practical problems faced by the ethnographer, such as access and field relations. Finally, we look at some of the criticisms aimed at this unique approach and then look at a case study.
