ABSTRACT

The problem of dirty hands seems unfair and paradoxical. As usually described, situations are said to occur where we can be morally sullied by doing what is morally permissible or even obligatory. However, it is odd to say that we are worse for doing our duty and should experience moral regret, shame, or guilt for doing the right thing. If we deserve criticism for doing our duty, this creates a no-win situation: we are worse for doing our duty, but also worse for failing to do so.
