ABSTRACT

Within environmental psychology Proshansky's (1978; Proshansky and Fabian, 1987; Proshansky, Fabian and Kaminoff, 1983) model of place-identity has dominated the literature. Yet place-identity has not been adequately theorised in relation to a general model of self and empirical work has not been fed back into theoretical development even though there has been much done that has relevance to theory development. By contrast, within social psychology identity theories have been tested and elaborated on extensively but theorizing about place and identity has largely been neglected. This chapter reviews theoretical and empirical work within this context.
