ABSTRACT

In training sessions we have had on setting up and running groups for parents of teenagers we have focused on the following as essential elements of the group leader's role:

• To create an informat non-threatening working atmosphere. This can be encouraged in the first session by providing tea, coffee, biscuits or a glass of wine and a friendly atmosphere in which getting to know each other is a high priority. This probably seems like an obvious point but it is very evident that parents do feel very threatened by attending a group. This is clear from the feelings that parents have described to us in later sessions. A summary of these feelings is provided at the end of this chapter under the heading of 'Parents' feelings when they first attend a group'. Studying these comments should help group leaders to plan methods of making parents feel at ease. Some ideas are also given in our booklet 'Games and exercises used in fun and families groups' and in Part Three of this book.
