ABSTRACT

At the beginning I would like to try and avert any difficulty with terminology. The key deliverable of project planning is, unsurprisingly, a plan which documents what needs to be done, when and by whom. This is, as shown in Figure 12.1, often expressed in the form of a Gantt chart. You will find this document sometimes also referred to as a bar chart, a plan, a programme or a schedule. In the UK you will often hear this sort of plan referred to as a project programme, whereas in the USA it is a schedule. Use of the word programme causes additional confusion both because Americans spell it program and because it means a portfolio of projects. I will endeavour to use the word schedule rather that programme and if I want to refer to a portfolio of projects I will use the American spelling.
