ABSTRACT

Illustrations can clarify complicated issues or make even simple information easier to assimilate. Some illustrations will be better in appendices. Some will be more conveniently accommodated in the body of the report. There are four reasons which may suggest that information should be relegated to appendices: Relevance, Size, Complexity, and Number of times to which it is referred. A pie chart is appropriate only where the whole item is being represented. This may be something such as expenditure or sources of pollution or types of raw material. In annual reports and similar documents, bar charts will take the form of some relevant symbol. Multiple bar charts in which the bars are bundled together so that they have a common start-point at 0 will permit individual bars to be read without losing the general impression. Maps and plans require special attention. They generally serve one of two purposes: to set an area in context or to show its detail.
