Whatisinvolvedintheconsciousnessofaconscious,'occurrent'propositionalattitude, suchasathought,asuddenconjectureoraconsciousdecision?Andwhatisthe relationofsuchconsciousnesstoattention?Ihopetheintrinsicinterestofthese questionsprovidessufficientmotivationtoallowmetostartbyaddressingthem.We willnothaveafullunderstandingeitherofconsciousnessingeneral,norofattention ingeneral,untilwehaveanswerstothesequestions.Ithinkthereareconstitutive featuresofthesestateswhichcanbeidentifiedbybroadlyphilosophicalinvestigation, andintheearlypartofthispaperIwilltrytodosomeofthatidentification.
