ABSTRACT

Larson and LaFasto (1989) define a team as “a unit of two or more people who interact and co-ordinate their work to accomplish a specific goal”. Kogler-Hill defines teams as “organizational groups composed of members who are interdependent, who share common goals, and who must co ordinate their activities to accomplish these goals” (in P G Northouse, 2001, p i61). Katzenbach and Smith (1993) define a team as “a small number of people with complimentary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable”. Katzenbach and Smith suggest that teams are likely to comprise between two and 25 members, with ten being an optimum number for achieving effective performance. Other authorities contend that the ideal team size lies between five and twelve members in total.
