ABSTRACT
No woman wrote more articles for National Geographic in the magazine’s first 50 years than Harriet Chalmers Adams. During her 30-year affiliation with the National Geographic Society, Adams contributed 21 articles to the magazine, mostly about Latin America and other places related to the Spanish empire. The magazine’s top editors considered her one of their experts on South America, and her vision of the Americas cohered well with the Geographic’s.
