ABSTRACT
Apprenticeship is an unexpected term to encounter in a book on aspects of professional education written at the end of the twentieth century. It has by now acquired many emotional connotations (Brooks and Sikes 1997), many of which are somewhat negative. The term is deliberately chosen, however, to provoke thought about the relevance of this long-standing mode of occupational learning to modern professional education.
