ABSTRACT

Warren Buffett Succession management is moving up the corporate agenda but is proving increasingly difficult to implement. Succession, or, who moves into the positions of power, has been a "tipping point" throughout human history. It has triggered wars between nations, sparked political divisions, ignited family feuds, and it has led to the downfall of many businesses. Sixteen per cent of organisations think that succession and resourcing is well integrated with the business planning process; more than 50 per cent perceive little link between them. Succession, an organisational event that used to happen relatively infrequently, is becoming a familiar feature of the corporate landscape. One survey concluded that forced chief executive officer succession has become the new norm in the United States and this trend of "deliver or depart" is seen to be emerging throughout the rest of the world. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
