ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the determinants of child work in Bangladesh. Nearly half of girls and boys aged 10-14 years were involved in income generating work. More girls and boys who are working came from female headed households. Most boys came from households where there was unemployment. More boys from male headed households went to school, compared to those from female headed households. Girls and boys from the area of Beri Badh had the least percentage attending school compared to other areas, and 30 percent of female headed households had income below the poverty line. But when children's income was left out, 48 percent of female headed households were below the poverty line, showing that child income was an important part of the household income.
