ABSTRACT

Gulf Crude Birth Rates (CBRs) have been declining: from an estimated average o f 47 to 34 per 1000 population between 1950 and 1990. O f the six G ulf States, Oman and Saudi Arabia had the highest initial levels o f CBRs, whilst Bahrain and Kuwait had the lowest. The rate o f decline varied as well: Oman and Saudi Arabia experienced the slowest rates o f decline in CBR (0.2 percent and 0.4 percent per annum, respectively), whilst UAE enjoyed the most rapid rate of decline (1.3 percent per annum).
