Government Approach to Housing the Urban Poor in Egypt: the Need for an Alternative

The shift in the role of governments from provision-based to support-based housing policies has been globally advocated and has been adopted in some developing countries. In the support-based approach, people are perceived as active participants and competent partners in the housing process rather than receivers of the end-product. Such a participatory approach, it is argued, besides securing sustainable housing production, also fosters the capacity building of local communities.
