ABSTRACT

Some techniques will be more appropriate for some learning areas than for others; for example, it might not be appropriate to use self-study methods to learn highly interactive skills. Similarly, a large-scale seminar in an auditorium may not be the best way to learn skills requiring practical and/or written reinforcement. Open and distance learning apply a more structured approach than self-study, with detailed programmes which the learner will work through. A training course is composed of a mixture of input, discussion, written and/or spoken exercises and practical involvement. The trainers should start thinking of progressing from the matrix approach towards individual development planning, using the CPD planning concepts. The whole concept of mixing and matching development and learner needs is one that requires close consideration in order to get over initial barriers. A similar format and mind-set is applied by managers during appraisal.
