ABSTRACT

We have seen that a major problem exists with judgment in aviation. The question on the minds of pilots is 'What can be done about it'? Can judgment be taught? In this chapter we look at a series of experiments conducted in various places in the USA, as well as several other countries, that provide convincing proof that judgment can be taught to aviators and that such training can have a major impact on safety. Most of the experiments were conducted using beginning flight students, but two used pilots with private licenses. Two other studies have clearly demonstrated that teaching judgment concepts to operational pilots can have a positive impact on safety. Crew resource management training, which is closely related, has been conducted with operational corporate, airline, and military pilots with considerable success as well (Diehl, 1992, p.46).
