ABSTRACT

Historians in the United States have failed to give sufficient attention to Pietism as a religious movement of significance in North America. They have also overlooked its influence on other religious groups and movements in this context. And they have failed to employ it as an instructive category in the story of America’s religious history. Therefore the rising tide of new attention to Pietism by historians, both those primarily concerned with groups properly classified as “pietistic” and those focusing on the influence of Pietism upon other communities, warrants support by all parties interested in the full story of American religious history.
