ABSTRACT

In contrast to legally anchored church establishments, radical Pietist groupings have always constituted peripatetic churches (ecclesiae ambulatoriae). As a sign of special piety and as evidence of their active contribution to the creation of the divine kingdom founded upon worldwide awakenings, all pious scholars and the nobility, on their grand finishing tours (Kavalierstour), and artisans in their wanderings as journeymen sought to visit such special meetings in addition to attending regular worship services.
