ABSTRACT
Modern philanthropy is a relatively new phenomenon. Much has been written about philanthropy in academic circles and cultural anthropologists, certainly in the past, have studied the social function of the ‘gift’. Historians have also done their share and many countries have a rich history of ‘charity’, for example with the Charity Organization Society in the UK.
