ABSTRACT

Are we experiencing a crisis of confidence in the legitimacy of the corporation? The last 30 years of the twentieth century have been marked by a number of scandals and accusations of wrong-doing by corporations and business leaders within the UK and the USA. These accusations have been spurred by a variety of incidents, all seeming to turn on an abuse of privilege in relations with stakeholders. For example, the disclosure of information, attempts to massage corporate performance data (financial, environmental) and public opinion and influence on government policy.
