ABSTRACT

The under-reporting of violent incidents is a significant problem in monitoring such attacks and developing responses, and its importance cannot be over-emphasized. Unless there are accurate records, the case for additional resources for developing a safety strategy is difficult to make. Some people find it particularly difficult to report or discuss incidents of sexual abuse or threats. Another factor is the fear of further damaging the social worker-client relationship. Social work staffs have a responsibility to themselves and their colleagues to help prevent violent incidents. Part of this responsibility involves the reporting of any incidents which do occur. Reporting systems can aid investigation of risks at work where they are already used, or they may be developed as part of the procedures for implementing policy. It is essential that all employees are aware of the procedures for reporting violent incidents.
