ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a series of guidelines on good practice in relation to personal safety for employees in the workplace. Employers and employees sometimes forget that the environs of the work-place – the grounds, gardens and parking areas – are still part of the premises and need to be considered in terms of safety. Visibility is an important issue in grounds and car parks: people need to be able to see and be seen. Sometimes protecting the grounds and car parks of a workplace with fencing or walls is feasible and worthwhile. Access to workplace very often centres on the main door and reception service. Dealing with access points other than main doors can be difficult. It is often hard to persuade staff to keep back doors and side entrances locked. Case conferences provide opportunities for a number of agencies to share information about a particular client or family, and to recommend what further action, if any, should be taken.
