ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to enable learners to develop communication skills that will help them avoid or cope with violent situations. It describes how self-awareness and the awareness of others contributes to effective communication. The chapter explains what is meant by 'body language' and its importance in communication. It explains what is meant by assertiveness. The chapter demonstrates assertive communication. It also explains the importance of non-verbal communication, or 'body language', in communication as a whole, and why it is important to understand it in order to avoid or cope with difficult or violent situations. The chapter discusses with the group the possible effects of impressions and stereotypes we all have. It explains the rights of individuals and the importance of remembering that we and others have the same rights; also why remembering our and those of others is.
