ABSTRACT

The social goal of increasingly accessible environments is imperative for an advancing society. Network Rail plays a major role in providing such accessible public environments with station access and journeys per annum topping 1 billion (DFT, 2004). Add to this the market potential for 35% of the population who at present do not access the rail network and you have two very strong drivers to investigate rail network accessibility. With a specific interest in inclusive design a study has been based on one area of accessibility – passenger information systems and wayfinding considerations in the journey chain.
