ABSTRACT

Network Rail has taken the step of establishing ergonomics as a core engineering discipline in its organisation. This has created significant opportunities for the application of ergonomics within engineering processes in Network Rail. Henceforth, ergonomics has a role at the core of engineering design and system maintenance as well as covering the full system lifecycle including operations and maintenance. At the same time, being part of engineering for a major rail infrastructure company places responsibilities upon the way ergonomics is practised. The author works within the engineering team for the major improvement works on the West Coast Route Modernisation Project. This experience has led to ideas on what is required to maximise the integration of ergonomics practice with engineering processes across the company.
