ABSTRACT

In peace studies, the main themes and analysis arise from the examination of the social, economic and cultural origins of violence. The traditional paradigm dependent on military power and elite diplomacy does not pay much attention to the security needs of individuals and groups. Traditional security is anchored in the myth of an orderly national space in need of protection from outside danger through military means. The immediate measures to control physical violence include peacekeeping and enforcement functions. Peace making has been defined in terms of promoting mutual understanding in managing and resolving differences in critical issues through dialogue. World federalists place a major responsibility for controlling violent behaviour on the supra-national organisations with the capacity to settle disputes and enforce law. Personal peace would not solve the problems of poverty around the world and human rights abuse. The quest for peace will be a never ending process.
