ABSTRACT
Much of the book so far has been examining two sharply contrasted pairs in Paul’s way of thinking: ‘flesh’ and ‘Spirit’; ‘law’ and ‘faith’. We have discovered the clarity in Paul’s thinking:
(a) ‘living by faith’ excludes ‘living by law’; (b) ‘living in the Spirit’ brings to an end ‘the deeds of the flesh’; (c) ‘the law’ is no longer needed once ‘the deeds of the flesh’ are brought to
an end; (d) ‘living by faith’ is not equivalent to ‘living by the Spirit’; (e) at least some, if not most (more precision on this is to come in the
following section and in Chapter 11), of those who ‘live by faith’ are ‘infants in Christ’ who have ‘the first instalment of the Spirit’.
