The way that passengers will behave in an emergency is often dependent on how well they have prepared for the situation in which they find themselves. Passenger preparedness can be a significant factor in survivability, evacuation efficiency and injury rates should an emergency arise. For example, the National Transportation Safety Board investigated 21 accidents that occurred between 1962 and 1984. They found that:

In some of these cases, not only were passengers generally very poorly prepared, but sometimes they behaved inappropriately, or even contrary to cabin crew instructions.
