ABSTRACT

For most long-haul travellers there are two problems associated with flying: 'travel fatigue', which arises because of the hassles associated with making a journey to a distant land and adapting one's lifestyle to it; and 'jet lag', which will affect those who travel long distances from their home country to the west or east, but not those who travel in a north-south direction. Both can be debilitating and distract travellers from performing at their best at a meeting or in a competition, or temporarily reduce their enjoyment in the new environment. The aim of this chapter is to explain the nature and cause of these two problems. A further aim is to give advice on how to reduce their negative effects.
