ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book offers depth and conceptualisation of these methods from a theoretical perspective and challenges the notion of established concepts such as the action/review approach of the ‘adventure wave’, pushing people out of their comfort zones and frontloading activities. It provides insight into the outdoor and experiential approaches of the Czech Republic. The dramaturgy wave, pushing comfort zones in an atmosphere of physical and emotional safety, framing games in fantasy and using play in achieving educational outcomes, provides a broader and refreshing perspective for outdoor and experiential learning. Research findings have suggested that participants may not only produce the most learning when pushed out of their comfort zones. Qualitative findings of the effects of these programmes indicate that the Intertouch courses resulted in many powerful experiences leading to personal and interpersonal development that was evident up to two years after the courses.
