Becauseofvariationsintheavailabilityofdata,itisimpossibleto obtainperfectlycomparableevidencefromothersocieties.Nevertheless,thebroadfeaturesofcontrolcanbediscerned,andIhavesetout elsewhere(Scott1988a:Table4;Scott1986:Tables6.3and6.6)the mostup-to-dateevidenceontrendsinownershipandcontrolin variouscountries,usingessentiallysimilarmethodstothoseusedfor Britain.Theconclusionsofthatreportneednotberepeatedhere,but itisnecessarytocontrasttheBritishsituationwiththatfound elsewhere.
