ABSTRACT
Kafka says that all books worth reading should “bite and sting . . . and strike us like a blow on the skull.”2 Fear and Trembling seems to promise this. But with second thoughts, it has an unnervingly light-hearted, teasing tone, at odds with the seriousness of the subject. Its author seems to be of two minds about fear and trembling.
