ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how managers and their teams need awareness of national trends, local information and a willingness to be self-critical. It provides a real life story of a thinking and creative manager in action. The original focus of the 'Imaginative Uses of Section 1 Money' workshop was some preventative work undertaken by a team of social workers in an inner city social service. Normalisation is now an accepted theoretical base for working with people with a mental or physical handicap. It may be of use in developing a strategy of prevention. A concept of normalisation would suggest that provision should be as extensive as possible - a social service rather than a residual service. The various projects came about from intense dissatisfaction with the way the authors were working with a group of families who were continually asking for Section 1 money.
