ABSTRACT

Athens has a long-lasting and close relationship with the Olympic Games. Greece is the only country that has participated in all the ancient and modern Games without exception, and Athens was the city where the first modern Games took place in 1896. Therefore, the selection of Athens to host the 28th Olympic Games in 2004 was inevitably linked with the history of the event; Olympic Movement values were re-baptised in an ethical discourse with strong references to the narrative of antiquity (Panagiotopoulou 2003).
