ABSTRACT

London’s bid to host the 2012 Games has attracted considerable public debate in the UK over recent years with critics focusing on the issue of costs and supporters emphasising the importance of the regenerative legacy to East London and the boost to the global reputation of London that arises from hosting the Games. This chapter reviews the ‘story so far’. It examines the

origins of the bid and its association with the renewal and regeneration of East London. It outlines some of the main promises and policies that central, city and local government agencies aspire to achieve and also explains the complex governance structures established to deliver these aspirations. Finally, the chapter discusses one of the key social issues raised by the emphasis on the catalytic role the Games may play in the process of urban regeneration in East London.
