ABSTRACT

In this chapter I draw on events recorded in the years 1970, 1972, 1975, and 1977. In 1970 there were no fundamental changes about violence and most other matters since 1968. However, the Federal and Queensland governments began to build new houses on the northern ridge. The location was contrary to the wishes of the people, who wanted the houses in the village/camp area where most of them were living. This could have been done. The Momington Islanders may have subconsciously realized that a new location would adversely affect their lives. The housing programme really began to get underway in 1972. Many people were ambivalent about the new houses. They were reluctant to give up their old dwellings because no matter how dilapidated their dwellings were they were their own. But when they saw the size of the new houses they began to view them in a more positive manner. Even so, a few people continued to build their own little houses.
