ABSTRACT

The present chapter deals with fighting among the Lardil and Yangkaal in the years before the Mission was established in 1914 and before the missionaries gained hegemony. I rely on the published accounts by Dick Roughsey and from my own records including taped recordings about fights related by Gully Peters in 1966. Of particular interest are the reports of violence, in 1946-47, by the Mission Superintendent Burt McCarthy. Chapters 5 and 6 deal with case histories of fights that I witnessed in the 1960s and 1970s. In Chapter 7 I offer some explanations of why there has been so much violence.
