ABSTRACT

In recent years, scholars have made significant contributions to our know­ ledge o f various aspects o f the vocal and instrumental performance o f Verdi’s operas. The critical edition o f The Works o f Giuseppe Verdi, published by the University o f Chicago Press and Casa Ricordi, has led the way Research connected with the preparation o f each volume (.Rijqoletto, E rnani, Nabucco, Messa da Requiem, Luisa M iller, II trovatore, A lz ira , L a traviata, II cor saw, and, most recently, I masnadieri) has provided new insights into Verdi’s autographs and other contemporary musical sources, which are o f great value to performers. Although the historical introductions and critical commentaries with every score furnish the user with the m ost up-to-date research, there is much that remains to be done in the area o f performance practice.
