ABSTRACT

A quick overview of ON-IJE in the last chapter indicated the use of mythological language within the oracles. There are some places within ON-IJE in which extensive use is made of mythological material the first of which is in Isa. 14.4-23. More than one myth may be present in these verses, a possibility that will be looked at as we go along. No attempt is being made at an extensive examination of the passage, which has already been handled in a vast array of literature; attention will be paid only to those aspects which highlight the mythical character of the verses. For the sake of clarity the structure of the whole section will be considered and notice will be taken of attempts to date the oracle.
