Intheearlysummerof1694,ashipcalledtheCharlestheSecondwas lyingatanchorofftheGroyneneartheNorthWesterncornerofSpain. Sheisdescribedasamerchant-ship,privatelyowned,andwasunder thecommandofCaptainGibson;shehadacrewofabout180menand carriedanarmamentof40piecesofordnance.Shewassupposedtobe onavoyagetotheWestIndies,butaccordingtoonememberofher crew,JohnDan,shehadbeenlyingofftheGroyneforthreemonths, althoughhegavenoreasonforthisdelay.Danalsosaidthatthecrew hadreceivednowagesforeightmonthsandwerebecomingrestive. Therewereothershipslyingnearby,inparticularagalleycalledthe James,andhercrewwerealsobecomingmutinousbecausetheyhadnot receivedtheirpay.
