ABSTRACT

As motorcycle riders are vulnerable road users, methods and interventions to reduce their casualty rate are always being sought. For an intervention to be effective an understanding of the nature and type of crash that they are exposed to, as well as any elements of rider behaviour that might place them at greater risk, is needed. While the statistical evidence on where, how and why crashes occur is useful in assessing the crash itself, methods designed to reduce the number and severity of such crashes require an understanding of rider goals and motivations.
