ABSTRACT

As far as domestic housing was concerned, Modernism had in the 1930s never really captured the hearts of the middle and lower middle-class home seekers it was designed to woo. The sun-lled future, pictured in the advertisement shown in the introduction to this part, with its suburb of Modern Movement housing, was never to come about in the austerity years following the war – nor ever since. In general, Modernism fell into decline in the post-war years, but it was never forgotten completely, and several architects contributed outstanding Modernist designs – or designs in the spirit of Modernism.
