ABSTRACT

Not only was there a lack of enthusiasm for Modernist houses in the general public, there were also diering opinions amongst leading architects resulting in a continuing polemic in the architectural journals and in BBC broadcasts. In addition, the Modernist architects had to cope, maybe not surprisingly, with local authorities rmly rooted in Tudorbethan and neo-Georgian house styles, and planning permission for anything slightly dierent was very often dicult to obtain. This chapter deals with those conicts as they became apparent throughout the decade. Some of the more controversial planning applications that received a particularly wide press at the time will be discussed when the particular buildings and their architects are presented in Chapters 11 and 13.
